Cancer of the thymus is a rare disease and has no known risk factors or causes. There are two major types: thymoma and thymic carcinoma. Other even more rare tumors also exist such as thymic neuroendocrine (carcinoid) tumors as well as others. Even though the word "thymoma" sounds like a "benign" tumor, it is a cancer. The best treatment is complete surgical removal but in some large tumors, chemotherapy and radiation are also needed. Thymic carcinomas most often requires complex treatment with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery that is complex, difficult and performed with a wide range of surgical techniques. Dr. Cameron is an expert in this field and is one of only a few surgeons able to perform many of these complex surgeries on the thymus with small incisions and the assistance of the Da Vinci robot. This reduces the impact of the surgery and speeds recovery.
